senior thesis crisis
i have a sense of impending doom. there is a week left and i am entirely at a loss. i know that by choosing something specific, i will nail myself into a box. so it has to be a general theme, from which i can branch out and do all sorts of interesting things that will somehow relate to each other. the question is, WHAT AM I TO DO? or what KIND of theme am i to do? i would like to do lots of little things - maybe some portraits, or drawings of objects or places...and give it some sort of meaning and coherence...

keeping in mind your love for stories, poetry, and patterns, i'd stick to those three, giving yourself a specific route and always feel free to veer from that (no one stays exactly what they proposed!)
ReplyDeleteok yelena, jen's comment was good, and i think most importantly is that you manage to get fabric designs in your thesis in a big way.
ReplyDeleteyou know what i think you should do: I think you should draw your favorite building in your favorite cities and towns of the world, perhaps with a few characters that you can cast into each setting, all wearing outfits inspired by the building they find themselves in or around. this gives you a frame work so that you have something to light your way, but gives you great freedom to deviate if you feel like you're getting bored or complacent, and would allow you to do the things you do best: stylishly dressed young people in well-appointed locales. This way you have also the choice to inject some sort of narrative into the scenes if you so desire: A spy peeking over a parapet, a poacher set on killing the dog-sized elephant that the elegant lady walks on a leash, An attractive young gentleman who sits reading, unaware of the young lady who gazes at him longingly. And you can choose from literally anywhere in the world (or beyond!) if you want, from a mud hut in africa to the empire state building.
okay yelena, ken's comment was good, but ...nah i have nothing to criticize. GOOD JOB KEN
ReplyDeleteFirst, I think you should take a deep breath and let it out. You are full of creative and interesting ideas and you will do something great and beautiful no matter what.
ReplyDeleteKenny had a very good suggestion. Taking his comment into consideration, I think it would be helpful for you to write down everything you want to do and like to draw ( and I mean everything) and see what they all have in common. I think if you see it all there in front of you, you'll be able to think of a theme or idea that will incorporate most of it.
I hope this helps
Becca
dear all, thank you for the very thoughtful suggestions. i will try to incorporate everything you all said under one topic. i suppose this is just a way of doing everything that i like and everything that i am good at, so it shouldn't be quite so scary as i imagine it.
ReplyDeletethanks again
also, kenny, i thought of some villains:
mr. hyde
moriarty from the final problem of sherlock holmes
the queen of hearts
count dracula
and if you are considering count olaf, you may as well consider lord voldemort!
oh and BLUE BEARD!
