sketch for "alice in wonderland"

here is my sketch for dan's class. kenny, i am assuming you have heard about this assignment. i picked a fashion spread for tim burton's "alice" and i just sent this to daniel for his opinion, but what'd ya'll think? the dress is anna sui. i am going to add richer color and of course pattern to everything, and for the lace on the dress and tights, i would like to find some sort of cream-colored pen or something, because i don't want to use black. any ideas?

the anna sui dress!

  1. OK. I'm going to try to ignore the fact that I gasped when I saw your illustration and give you a balanced critique. Here we go:

    1. I wonder about the discrepancy between the amount of holes in the lace on the dress in real life and in your illustration. I think you should try penciling the rest in and see if it works or if it is ornamentation overkill.

    2. While I am very fond of the jaunty awkward position that is so favored in your oeuvre, and while I think it injects some much needed life into the fashion pose, I think that the head needs a tad more room because it gets somewhat distracting.

  2. wow yelena, this is going to turn out so well.

I do agree with ken's second point though, just a tad more room for the head.
I love what you're doing with the patterning. a cream or light tan colored pen would be great, you don't want to muddy up the composition.

also fantastic chandelier and fan. a+++

(it took me a really long time to find the plus symbol, much longer than necessary)

  3. I think maybe paint the dress slightly off white and use a white pen to draw over it? I also agree with Ken that the head needs just a little more room and less tilt.
Critiques aside, it is BEAUTIFUL! This is such a well thought out scene. I think the black chandelier is my favorite.

  4. thank you all!
i will give her head more room.

kenny, i am also afraid of ornamentation overkill. that's why i want to do the lace in something very light, i just have to find that something. i will paint the dress slightly off-white, like becca said, and see if i can draw lightly on top of that.

i will take these into account + what daniel says when he emails me back. and then i should have the final by next wednesday.

    thank you!
